From the life of Buddha to the intricate debates with Hindu and Confucian traditions, this course offers an immersive journey through the rich history, core teachings, and diverse practices of Buddhism. This course is ideal for anyone looking to enrich their knowledge of one of the world’s most influential spiritual traditions.

B.N. Hebbar holds a Ph.D. in the History of Religions from the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) and a Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree in Religion from the University of South Africa. He taught World and Eastern Religions for 25 years at George Washington University and for a decade at the University of Maryland Honors Program, where he received the Bender Teaching Award in 2006.

  • Week 2: Explore the pivotal Buddhist Councils and the spread of Theravada Buddhism across Southeast Asia.
  • Week 3: Delve into the core teachings of Buddhism, the Fourth Buddhist Council, and the emergence of Mahayana Buddhism.
  • Week 4: Trace the expansion of Mahayana Buddhism into China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan, and learn about the key schools in these regions.
  • Week 5: Follow the journey of Vajrayana Buddhism into Tibet, Bhutan, and Mongolia, and understand its unique schools and practices.
  • Week 6: Engage with the dynamic Hindu-Buddhist and Confucian-Buddhist debates that have shaped Buddhist thought.
